My timing chain has gone out and now my oil pan and pickup is full of plastic bits.
I bought a nice Cloyes set to replace it.

Should I just get a new pickup or should I go ahead and get a nice new pump?

I don't want some crappy Chinese repro part, and the Melling pumps seem like quality parts.

If I were to go ahead and purchase a Melling M22FHV pump to replace the stock pump, do you think my bottom end would starve on a stock '72 350?

 

More information you may need to know.

The car has approximately 77k miles on it (maybe less, it had undersized tires on it for like 12 years)

It maintains 50 psi of oil pressure on the highway and about 20-25 at a redlight.

 

You can reuse the oil pump, just clean out the pick up really well. A high volume pump won't starve your engine but isn't necessary.

I would never replace the oil pump driveshaft unless it was damaged. It is just a rod that goes from the bottom of the distributor to the oil pump.

 

X2 on above and you can also reuse your oil pump drive.

The HV pump will NOT "suck the pan dry".
