Thermostat Housing

Hello:

My son rebuilt the 71 olds 350 from our cutlass and after awhile the housing would leak a little from the bolt. It seems the surface of the original housing may not be smooth enough. I got one from Fusick but it did not have the metal tube (my fault). We purchased one yesterday from Rock Auto made by AC Delco and it looks correct. Hoping this solves the leaking.

Can the old housing be reconditioned?

Thanks

I apologize if i'm confused by your issue, but if it's leaking from the bolt, then why are you replacing the housing? A light coating of Ultra Grey on a few of the bolt threads might be all you need. My 270,000 mile housing had some pits on the gasket surface, so i just carefully filed it to get it back to a nice smooth surface.

he put the sealer around the gasket area but that did not stop it and he said it looked to be coming from the bolts. What did you file your gasket surface with?

another update is that the housing is chipped which in turn causes it to leak from one of the bolts

I use plumbers pipe dope with Teflon on the threads for those bolts because they thread all the way through the water passage.
