strong exhaust at start up from my '71 350
Hi, when i start my car it seems to expel a lot of exhaust. i'm running a once it warms up and i take it for a drive it goes away. its never done this before, just want to know if it a matter of adjusting my rebuilt Qjet or something else. I'm running a 4bbl on a edelbrock performer intake. i ran it good yesterday and then checked the plugs and they're all looking good, a nice tan colour, no oil fouling on any of them.
this is something new, i've never had it do this before. just started after i put the Qjet and the intake on. before that i had an edelbrock carb and perfromer RPM intake.

If you recently re-installed the intake, you may not have sealed up your ports on the gasket sufficiently and may be getting a small coolant leak that is prevalent upon startup but not so noticeable when the engine warms up and is able to burn the excess moisture.
Describe the smoke color and how long it persists.
The new intake and carb suggests that this is where the problem started. Find the factory service manual on wildaboutcars.com and reset the choke and idle adjustments exactly as described herein - that should get you running reasonably well in that department.

yeah i think its the choke, i adjusted it a bit and it seemed to make an improvement.
the rodquad is rebuild so i have to deal with those little idle mixture "screw heads" which are hard to get at. i say "screw heads because obviously a screw drive can't be used. they're just little metal tabs just smaller than a pencil eraser. i've been using the end of a vacumm hose to turn them, is there an easier way or a tool?
