strange engine noise

wondering if anyone has heard this before, not the squeeking scrapy noise, the more of a knock sound towards the end.

Take the belts off and see if it still makes the noise.

i took the belts off and it still made the noise. the screachy noise is gone, part of the baffle in the valve covers were bent just enough for two rocker arms to scrap against it. its the knock type noise im concerned with, ive had main and rod knocks and they didnt sound quite like this nor were they as loud.

Check the flexplate for cracks, and the bolts, they could be loose.

It's a manual, I'm going to pull the engine and look at the bottom end. Found a 403 I might replace it with

Took the engine apart and one of my rod bearings was annihilated and the crank is toast. After seeing the rod bearing and crank I understand why it was so loud, never heard a rod this loud before

That's too bad on that engine. Hopefully something else will turn up.

I had a 400g block that made the same noise, tore it down and the #4 connecting rod bearing was wiped out!

I've heard that noise on a few olds motors and it always ended up being a rod bearing...

Brought home two engine today, both early 350's a short block and a complete engine the was rebuilt years ago then the car was wrecked. I didn't pull the heads but I pulled the valve covers and oil pan and it's really clean inside. Anyone know about b517 pistons, only number I could find from the bottom.

B517 makes me think of Badger piston.

I don't know much about them. If you google "badger piston" you might get a response or a 404 error page.

The name has been around awhile, and associated with OEM piston replacement.

Plan on the compression being low. The pistons are probably cast with a lower piston pin height. Lots of threads on that.

Its all up to you to do the proper measuring, or you are just guessing. Don't rely on what the internet tells you.

You could over come this with careful consideration to the other factors. Head gasket thickness, deck height and how much material is removed from the head.

You have to measure this stuff, or you'll be pissing in the wind.

This leads to proper length push rods...and rocker arm contact. This is after you've done your home work. Lots of fun isn't it?

Moral==don't take nothing for granted and trust but verify.
