Starter - 1984 Cutlass with Rocket 350

Hello all!

I have an 84' Cutlass that has a Olds 350 (73-74 from what I can tell). I've always noticed that the car will take a little longer than normal to start, and yesterday the starter stopped working. I was wondering if I should use a starter made for an 84, since it has the original tranny(rebuilt), or if I should use one for a 73-74, and if it would even fit? Thanks!

All 1964-90 Olds V8 gas engine starters are physically interchangeable. You specifically do not want to use the small, light duty starter from the 1984 307 on that older 350, however. The "taking a little longer to start" has nothing to do with the starter motor, however. So long as the engine turns over, the starter is fine. Are you sure the starter itself is bad and not the wiring or switches? If you really do need a starter, get one for a 1970-ish 350.

So it was working, and I was trying to crank it after not running for awhile then all of a sudden it would do one single "click" when engaging the key to start. Battery is brand new and checked voltage/charge on it. Thanks for the quick reply on this by the way!

What is your battery voltage? A fully charged battery is 12.6/7v. you start to run into problems when the battery falls below 12.06v (50%).

Verify that your battery terminal connections (and all connections in the starter circuit) are clean and tight. I've found that a formerly good starter that suddenly just clicks is often caused by a corroded or loose battery terminal. Check that before buying a starter.
