Smoke

Okay fellas, looking for sone help here.....350 Rocket, in a 72 442. Just purchased.

On start up no issues, but once it warms up, fair bit of oil getting burnt and exiting the tailpipes. What's the diagnosis?

Rings.....or valve seals?

It's been driven about 200 mi before I bought it and the guy told me it burnt about two and a half quarts of oil for that trip.

Nope still nothing.

We need more information. Does it burn oil on acceleration or decelleration. Have you done compression, leak down tests?

True enough....I'm just too lazy to actually do a compression test haha

I don't have a plate etc to take it out for a drive unfortunately...so I can't tell you much more.

Your located in Burlington eh? I'm next door to Oshawa....no doubt I'll be rebuilding it anyway...any good knowledgeable Olds builders in the GTA?

i'm in the middle of you both, geographically speaking (north York)

start with a wet & dry compression test & perform a leak down test as well.

i had my 330 rebuilt by Cesar at Mississauga engines ( in Streetsville)
hes old school and knows his stuff!

it could be dry valve seals, stuck / worn oil or compression rings or it could just be in need of a good flogging!

Valve guide seals are an easy and inexpensive repair. It may also have some ring issues! Double check your PCV and the vent hose on the other valve cover. Check for excessive blowby by pulling your PCV with the engine running and looking at the PCV port.

Do the valve seals as said first, just get a good spring compressor. Dale Robinson(gmrocket) on ROP of 307 EMC fame is down in that area somewhere. His 307 is over 500 hp this year. He did ream me out for complaining about Edelbrock's old head design and not immediately buying a set when they redesigned them. I bought a SP2P off him, transaction went smooth and shipped in a timely matter though.
