Rocker Arm Damage

Rocker Arm Damage

Heard a small clicking sound this week and found a damaged rocker, 10k miles on the rebuild 14 months ago with regular oil changes. Is this a rare thing or a common failure? The other rockers were great.

Additional info: This was on the #7 cylinder on a '67 330, exhaust valve, and the exhaust valve tip looks great. Using stronger springs to match the higher lift cam (0.486"). Pushrod looked great. Perfect wear pattern on the other rocker tips.

We replaced the exhaust valves during this rebuild, kept the stock rockers, maybe the new valves are harder? Maybe stock rockers should all be replaced?

It could be there was some wear and it maybe the factory hardening only goes so far? Could be harder valves and higher spring pressures are the cause. I would consider the Harland Sharp or Scorpion pedestal mount true roller rocker arms.

What about Comp Cams Magnum Rockers? Anyone have bad experiences with these?

This is a cruiser, not a dragster, so I'd prefer a cost-effective option, but I don't want to waste money on a product that may eventually fail. Any advice would be much appreciated (thanks).

Is you valve stem length the same for that rocker as the rest?

I didn't measure valve stem length, I've since buttoned up the valve covers, but I'll measure next time.

The roller tip rockers are fine for your application. Full rollers are just overkill. But with going to this rocker there is work involved . You will need to check for proper pushrod length regardless of what comes in the kit .

Those are a decent rocker arm, I am running them on my 350 with stiff double springs and no problems. I am going to 1.72 ratio full roller Scorpion rockers shortly.

Keeping the guide plates and possibly the studs. I will let them go really cheap. The 5/16 to 3/8 conversion studs are around $60.
