Relocating my altenator

Relocating my altenator

Ok looking to relocate my altenator. WAnt to do away with my A/C compressor to save some weight. Now rather than use the passenger side altenator mount which may be in the way of my fuel rails. I was thinking about mounting down low kinda straight across from the PS pump. Question is which pulleys can I or should I use. I was think it might be better to use the ubused crank and water pump pulley grooves. But would that throw off the altenator?

Ok here is what I have done. I simply took the aluminum 307 altenator mount and flipped it to use on the passenger side. So now it's upside down and cradling the altenator. Them I had some aluminum tube with sperical rod ends that i plan on using ffor the top. I have yet to get everything the way I want it as well as lining the pulleis up. Cut the darn aluminum tube to short. So have to do all that over again. But let me know what you think.

How rigid is that tube? Will it flex under load? I would be concerned that the belt would slip or pulley alignment would be off during higher RPM. No experience with adapting brackets, but that was the first thing I thought of when I saw your pictures.

Get the alternate brackets off of an 330 olds non-ac car they work perfect to solve this issue and lines up with a three grove pulley system. Used this method on my 57 Olds

Can't plan on going EFI and it will probably interfere with the fuel rails.

The tube is pretty rigid but I won't know how well it will work till I finish lining it up and bolting everything down.

No, the bracket uses the front of the head bolt holes and and off the water pump. its sets to the side of the head not on top

Sorry was thinking of the other left sided one. DIdn't know about the 330 one being different.

Ok I could make my system work but would require some grinding or cutting to the altenator which I don't want to do because if I ever need to replace it I would have to do it all over again. So if anyone has one of the 330 mounts please let me know.

Ok it's really coming together. I switched to the 3 groove crank and water pump Pullies. Had to slight space them out but everything lines up pretty darn nice. There is on problem though. The aluminum rod I am using for a brace is kinda in the way of the oil fill tube. But I will get that figured out.

Good luck stickman .With the alignment correct, it`s just the torsional aspect really eh
BTW good pics --really help a thread don`t they.Sometimes the written word requires so many words to explain , it makes " War and Peace " look like an afternoon read.

OK I am all done with this project and I think it came out ok. I need to redo the rod cause it looks bad but other than that it is really nice. I got the pullies all straight and the altenator is really sturdy. I had to drill one hole in the aluminum mount and sand down the back to get everything straight and lined up. But it looks pretty nice.
