Getting posts like yours makes being a part of this site worth it. The next best thing to "hearing it run" is reading posts where friends were able to help make a difference. About "hearing it run" I sure am getting anxious about my little project and hearing the 455 after about three years of silence.

You might consider finding an alternative routing for the alternator wire bundle and the oil/water sensor lines, either originate lower from the driver's side fender, coming up nearer the power steering pump, then directly above the timing cover and under the water neck across the front of the engine; or going the stock route along the top of the driver's side valve cover to the firewall although that route requires a longer alternator wire bundle because you have to go back to the firewall from the battery then back up to the front of the engine.

Nice job! That's gotta feel pretty good!

I'll have to second Oldsguy...route those wires a bit better.
Or at least get your alternator bundle OFF the valve cover
and heater hose.

Now get you butt working on that firewall!

But I needed to have that engine ready to go in one weekend. Thats how amazing I feel, I finished putting it together, painted it, put it in, hooked it up, and broke it in, in one weekend ! no sleep, no food, omg i was dead

Will do, like i said, how it is now, is how it was when i found it , lol didnt know it wasnt original, but your right, and it will look way better. I also need to get the heater core hose off the valve cover, im not driving it enough right now to get it hot, but soon ill get a coupler and lengthen that hose a few inches, and insulate it so it doesnt melt. Which oddly enough recently happened in my jeep, because someone didnt do it right LOL

I have to say great job! I open the hood of my '66 Cutlass and look at the 330 which has seen better days and having never attempted any major mechanical work like removing an engine, I will admit scares me to death. I see efforts like this that inspire me to do it to my ride, but as soon as I see the miles of vacuum lines and the simple fact of no engine hoist or stand, I just wipe it down and close the hood. Someday. One big pat on the back from me though.

I love the gold, it's so much easier on the eye then that chubby orange.., I'm glad you did the manifold gold too.. When I built my engine I kept it aluminum, then over the winter I had a leak I fixed, I took the time to paint it gold.
Nice..

Looks great! I bet you have to stand on the gas pedal to overcome the pressure of that return spring.

Boy, isn't that the truth. And the motor looked downright virginal with the exhaust manifold bolt tabs still there. Not many mechanics are going to be replacing those if the exhaust manifolds have ever been off of the headsr. My son has my '70 Cutlass with a motor that has never had the heads off or been removed from the car. God only knows how many miles are on the car now but it still doesn't smoke or use a drop of oil. However, bearings have finally gotten thin enough for him to park it until the rebuild happens.

It's good to see original examples still out there getting the attention that they deserve.

Thanks, this car has been definently well taken care of. And actually i believe the heads have been pulled off sometime before i got it. It only had 127,000 miles on it, but the valve guides appear to be gnurled. I found it like that, it had been sitting for over 3 years. The only problem is, there isnt any paperwork as to whats been done to it. The transmission apears to have been pulled at somepoint in time, and the flexplate was replaced. But I dont know anything for sure. At least the next person who has this car will know when the engine was rebuilt completely ! lol Of course the fact that it was well maintained is why it fired right up and ran after i got the keys made for it. : )

I noticed you sprayed the entire engine once it was assembled. It definitely looks good! Is that the "orignial" shade of gold Oldsmobile used back in the day?

First of all, LOL i need to get a good CURRENT picture. It looks so much better with the right carb and everything re routed. I doubt its the original shade, its "universal" gold engine enamel. Thanks, i put everything together and sprayed it. then put on the fuel pump, alternator, the bracketry, and the power steering pump. i dont know for sure, It has a 268 dur with 455 lift cam, i cant remember if thats adv or at .050. It will have headers and a dual exhaust, i have an HEI to stick in it, i also have the original #5 heads, however i still dont know what the valve size is. I did a 3 angle valve job and ground the valves. I have had a couple mechanic friends tell me its probably around 350 horse. It acts like it too. I have accidently roasted the tire (non-posi rear) a couple of times. This is with underinflated tires, really old tranny fluid and filter ! and the original exhaust. I cant wait to see how much she opens up once i get my headers and new exhaust on, along with getting the carb tuned properly, and getting my shift kit, fluid, and filter. ill try and remember to upload a current pic tomorrow. that reminds me, anyone know how to adjust the float level on a quadrajet ? Mine is a little high

Nice..
I actually bought that intake used, the guy painted it gold right out of the box, then when he sold it to me, he stripped the paint to show that it wasnt cracked or anything. It was only 9 months old, and in amazing condition, i basically got it for half of the original price of the Performer RPM.
