Olds 350 Alternator Bracket Question

Hey everyone,

Im in need of an alternator bracket for my 71 cutlass with a 350, no A/C. Thing is, I dont even really know what to look for. My car had an old aftermarket A/C setup on it which also acted as a mount for the alternator. I have since removed the whole A/C and bracket setup. In hind sight, I should have kept the big ugly bracket that mounted the Alternator, but i ditched it. Thats all water under the bridge now.

So, Could anyone post some pictures of a stock 350 olds alternator set up without AC? or even better, of what that bracket in question looks like on its own. This way I have an idea of what I need to look for on the forums / ebay.

And while I'm here, will a 455 alt. bracket work on a 350? Thanks, and any info you pro's have for me on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the site Postman! I've got an extra one, $15 plus shipping from Oregon. It would be next weekend before I can dig one out and get photos for you. John

I just checked my photobucket site and here's an example of the ones I have in mind. To answer your other question, yes the 350 and 455 used the same brackets. John

Thanks for the post Eric, I was thinking the style above were used until 1972, but I could be wrong. If Postman needs the other style I've got that setup too. Here's an example of that style:

I don't know which would be best for him, John, but I remembered that thread, with all the great pictures you posted, so I figured I should just link to it. It spells it out very well!

My parts book shows 66-72 using 397209 support bracket, 390145 strut, 390146 adjusting link for V8 without CAC or A.I.R. The top bracket has two holes to accommodate the engine height difference between SBO and BBO.

Wow, you guys are helpfull! Thanks for the quick replies. Ok, so the way I see it right now, I have three options.

1. It looks like the first set of pictures by 2Blu442, the "H" style bracket that stretches over the D/S valve cover, could be used on an engine with or without out power steering. I.e, it only mounts to the engine and does not rely on any other engine brackets.

2. The second style of bracekts, also by 2blu442, needs to use the power steering bracket on the Drivers side. It mounts to the engine and the P/S bracket.

3. The third by Run to Rund, mounts on the Passenger Side. And looks like it will work with AC, no AC, or whatever.

Am I correct in saying that anyone of these brackets would work for me? I have no A/C, but do have Power Steering. If thats the case, I guess ill go with either the first or second brackets that 2blu442 has in stock. That sound right? Let me know if theres any glaring issues im missing. 2blu442, ill be in touch.

Once again, Thanks!

Question - the passenger side bracket is for non A/C motors. The other 2 are for A/C equipped motors. Did I here right that it doesn't matter for BB or SB, they are the same?

Yes---the "Run to Rund" photos are for no A/C and are inter-changable for big or small-block. The others are for FACTORY installed A/C. If no others chime in here, I MIGHT have an extra set. Try looking on eBay or posting something here in the "Parts Wanted" section. I'm sure PackRat of one of the other used part vendors here can help----I'd really rather keep my spares. I don't think they are available in repro.

Honestly, all three would work just as well for me. But if 2Blu442 has one of the styles on stock ill go for it. I guess if anyone has the passenger side style lying around, let me know.

Thanks for all the help, Ill hit you guys up if i have any problems with the install or whatnot.

Hello. My name is Neil. I came across this post while researching brackets to convert a 68 cutlass convert with no a/c to a/c. Figured best to obtain correct brackets and move alternator to right side. I picked up the compressor bracket and need the right driver side alternator bracket. Have a question for the alternator bottom bolt where Doed that bolt to the cylinder head? Don't see anywhere else it could be? it's not the exhaust manifold or where power steering? Also in need of the bolts in addition to the one bolt with thread on top into water pump for a/c support bracket. Any help is much appreciated.
