I use a slide hammer. Works great.

So u just take the dipstick out. Attach it to the slide Hammer and just try and take it out?
how do jou attach it to a slide Hammer? There is no tread or anything? I can but a screw in but isn't that going to damage the dipstick tube?

I selected a bolt that just slips into the tube. I welded this to another bolt that screws into my slide hammer. Slip this bolt into the tube, clamp it lightly with a vice grips and fire away.

The pic below was to remove a broken dipstick tube, but it should work to prevent a broken tube. Find a small slide hammer and fit a screw to the end that will screw into the dipstick tube. G-E-N-T-L-Y hammer the tube out of the block using light taps.

Whichever method you chose do not be even slightly surprised if you end up having to replace the dip stick tube.

Agree, usually in there but good. The best way is drop the pan and tap it up.

Dropping the pan with the engine in the car is never the "best" way to do anything. And in over 50 years of working on Olds motors I've never had to "tap it up". Slide hammer works every time, zero issues.

Had to do this myself. Ended up using a tap set to make some threads, just a few turns is enough. Then put an appropriately sized bolt to bite into the threads, attach a slide hammer to it and it will come right out. The new one needs to be tapped in.
