No such thing as a stupid Question?

Well this is a stupid question but I cant remember the answer. I took off the left exhaust manifold on my 1970 Vista Beater to fix a leak between the head and the manifold. I found 3 unused exhaust manifold gaskets in my stash. 2 are original manifold type with one shiny perforated side and 1 is a felpro header type with one grey perforated side. I think the header gasket is the better one. My question is does the perforated side go towards the head or the manifold?? Thanks for your help, Greg.

Shiny, perforated side towards the manifold to account for expansion.

Not directly relevant, but just to clarify: Originally Olds didn't use exhaust manifold gaskets - the manifolds were bolted directly against the heads.

If an Olds motor has exhaust manifold gaskets, they were added later.

"It's not a stupid question if you don't know the answer, not asking when you don't know, that is stupid".
Wise words I heard from a Royal Navy petty officer many years ago. I wish some of my school teachers had been that smart.

True that, Roger. Were you in the Royal Navy? I was in the US Navy.

That was what I figured. It's looking more and more like the 80,000 miles showing on this old girl probably is the first time around.

I was. With hindsight I would have signed on for 22 years and be taking things easy on a good pension now.
