Mystery 4jet carburetor part is ??

I'm about ready to put an old Rochester 4jet (A 4GC I believe) back together from a 50's Olds Rocket 88. I have the part in the picture staring at me on the bench and I have no recollection of removing it during the disassembly process, nor do I see it in the parts diagram, nor see anywhere on the carb where it might belong. Do you recognized this little guy? It looks like a small orifice or guide?

It is neither necessary nor in your best interest to post the same question in multiple forums, as keeping all responses in one thread will get you the correct answer sooner. I suspect that is item #49 in this drawing, the choke piston. Here's a link to the 49-56 Rochester info book.

Joe,
My first attempt at posting didn't appear to have been successful, so I tried again in a different location. In the end, the earlier one did eventually turn out to be fine. Lesson learned on the process there. Thanks for your suggestion on the part; it didn't turn out to be the choke piston, so we'll have to keep investigating.

Crew,
I have two 4-jets sitting on the bench. One of them is a 65 that I just put back together and the other one is a bastard that somebody has put together from a couple of different carbs. Neither of them has anything that looks like that part. The choke piston is larger and has a hole in it for the pin so i don't think that's what it is. Is the hole the same size all the way through ??

My first job (1960) was rebuilding carburetors, generators, alternators--the fiddly things. The mechanics who taught me kept the manly projects to themselves (transmissions, engines).

Seven years ago I rebuilt my cousins' carb from her 1966 Coupe DeVille so it could pass the CA emissions test. She visited when the cleaned parts were arrayed over my workbench. The look on her face said, "You'll never get it back together." (But her car passed the test.)

Long way of saying that the details of those carbs are etched in my brain.

I've not seen a part like that in your picture in a Rochester carb.

If this carb was on a 1950 Rocket 88 then someone put it there. Not the factory.
According to the tag number, and Joe's link to Rochester carbs, this carb is from a 1956 Olds with Hydra-Matic.
I, myself, have never seen a part like that in a 4GC carb.

Thanks to all for your part review. I concur, there was no place on the carb that lent itself to that little part. The 4jet was delivered to me in an open face box and perhaps this too was in there and rattled out onto the bench. That's the theory I'm convincing myself of anyway. The rebuild is complete and the 88 runs!. Thanks again
