My trip to the junkyard

I had a good trip to the junkyard this morning.I was looking for a front bumper for my mud truck and saw 2 425 oldsmobile engines.I know the owner and his son very well, asked about them. They said I can have them for $350.00 each.I took the deal backed my truck up loading them up and I trust them.Did check if they turned over with a breaker bar and socket, they do.Did not find the bumper I wanted.I did check the casting numbers, one is a 1965 and the other is a 1966.

Harmonic balancer and the flywheels are on both of them.I did see a large D on the right side bank.I have been told the 425 harmonic balancers fit the 425 only already.Carburators are on them too.

These are not cores, one came out of a rolled over 1966 Olds 98 and the other came out of a 1965 Olds 98.Both ran good before they got pulled. The 1966 425,I plan on dropping in a 1934 Ford street rod next year if I find a complete 1934 Ford.

Why destroy a complete 1934 Ford?

I had the impression that they were not making those anymore.

If Olds guys get PO'd at people dropping SBCs into their 40 year old cars, F_rd guys must get twice as PO'd at people dropping Rockets into their 80 year old cars.

I'm building a 46 Ford with 330 Olds for power. I don't care if it hair lips all of the old Ford people. The car was just a rusty body with no drive train, so the way I see it, I saved it from the scrap pile. Even if it had been complete, I would have done the same thing.

I am bugging a guy to sell me a 1934 Ford he has,in his garage and said not yet so far rust free.I talked to a couple Oldsmobile fanatics I know, they told me I "stole" them at that price.I seen the cars these engines came out of 4 years ago.The rolled over 1966 Olds 98 went in the crusher right away, only good part was the trunk lid that was saved. The 1965 98 was turned into a convertable, someone thought they would clear something and did not killing the driver. That car went to the crusher 2 years ago,it was picked clean of parts. The owner said he still has the transmissions for them, knows where they are and just going to give them to me.I gave him 3 good junk cars a couple monthes ago and wants to pay me back for doing for him in a good way.

Just about any old Ford I see at the shows have a SBC in them. I'd rather see an Olds in a Ford any day instead of a SBC in EVERYTHING.

I'm with ya there, but, think about it - kids started chopping those cars up in the late forties because they were everywhere and they were cheap. There was nothing particularly special about '30s Fords, except they were made pretty darn well, so they didn't get junked as often as some others, and therefore there were lots of them around for a price a kid could afford.

Fast forward to the 20-teens. It's 65 years after 1948, those cars are eighty years old now, and people are still hot-rodding them like it was the fifties (which was 50-60 years ago).

If I were a Ford restorer, I'd be spitting nails.
