ignition coil question

Hi

Im looking for a spot to clamp on my tachometer to show me the actual rpm. The manual says i have to put the alligator clamp between coil and distributor. Now i have 1979 98 with the 350 and it seems that it has an in-cap coil.i can see there two strands with two/three wires in it heading from the bottom to the cap of the whole distributor/coil thing. when i clamp it on there it gives me an rpm range from 350 to560 or so..not very effective.
does anybody know how to do or has somebody a better way to get the rpm?
Thanks in advance

Jan

On your HEI cap there should be a terminal not used marked Tach. A connection there should work.
