Really hate explaining to people every time but here it is. When I bought the car the person had put them on because where I live you have something called air care to pass then you get your plates. Also after I pass aircare I will be dumping them and putting on pypes violators exhaust with an x pipe.

What gear is in it? If you have the original 72 compression ratio it will tough but you I can grind you a small cam on a tight lobe sep, that'll keep your throttle response but give some tone. anyway you go you'll need to be careful you don't lose any low end and are able to still pass your air care.

I have a 2.5" Magnaflow system by now because it wasnt even possible to talk in the car while driving and is much nicer imo,(im getting old too )

My 70 Cutlass has 2 1/2" straight pipes with Flowmasters. I dont have tailpipes. I just have a small pipe with a slight bend after the Flowmasters. We call them duck tails. Its very loud and i set off neighbors car alarms.

Ok I just did a little looking and I found this. http://www.aircare.ca/ap-aircareworks.php There is NOTHING that says you should install cats on a car that didn't come with them from the factory. What you should do is fix the issue that is causing the car to over pollute in the first place.
15 years ago my friend had a 72 Cutlass that was a GROSS polluter by any standards. He was allowed 800 ppm HC and was blowing well over 2000. We determined that the heads were the culprit so we swapped them out. 2½ hours of work and the car was running like a top. He took the car in and blew something like 165 ppm HC and well within limits on CO and NOx.
I just can't buy that putting cats on the car was the only or even the CORRECT solution.
Anyhow good luck with the car.

Well I talked to the guy he said the engine was rebuilt but had to put cats on because it wouldn't pass. But after I get my plates I'm ditching those cat's even I said why put them on the car never came with them and wasn't made for them. So simple taking off the cat's and putting a exhaust system on.

The first word you wrote to describe the engine was "mild". So, it sounds mild and you want it to sound meaner. . .put in a mean camshaft and do what the others said above; perform a "meaner" build, and spend accordingly. Expect possibly shorter plug life, lower gas mileage, etc. I'd start with a bigger camshaft, and expect to use the engine at a higher rpm band because of it. You may need more differential ratio (higher numerically) to help keep the engine at higher rpm, a looser torque converter, etc. A big cam with "mild" gearing and stock torque ocnverter won't match well.

lol! I love that line. I used to say that before I had the 350 redone. Someone would say, boy sounds tough, I would say..."yep, pulled the number 7 plug wire, bumped the timing, and richened up the Rochester." Nothing sounds better or more unique than a beefed up Olds!

I like the sound of these myself. And of course... everyone knows the *** end of a 1972 Cutlass Supreme looks the prettiest.

Yeah haven't gone through emissions with my Cutlass on account of it still being in storage (Ziploc's), but I got a '72 Dodge Truck a couple years ago and the guys down at the check station knew me by name by the time it finally passed. It was failing BAD - so I fiddled with everything; mixture, timing, idle speeds... I was about ready to pack some cotton ***** in the exhaust pipe when I just happened to bump a hose with my arm and the engine sound changed - turned out the PCV valve seal had gotten dried out and shrank enough to where it wasn't sealing. Popped a new PCV valve that fit real snug into the gasket took it back. BAM! passed with flying colors and I'm talking a healthy margin from the max... couldn't beleive it that such a little air leak demolished the performance.
Cats in my mind = cop out.
Maybe add some of those electronic exhaust cutout that lets the exhaust dump straignt from the headers/exh. manifold. That would make it sound pretty loud/mean I bet.
Also, my car and truck both had glasspaks for mufflers and both engines sounded pretty dang mean to my ears when they run/ran. Any good mufflers are going to -well- muffle the noise.
