Head Bolt question

My 1970 350 has been back together for several months now. Got it back in the car and was bolting the accessories back on the front of the engine. Pulled the 2nd head bolt on the right side to put the A/c bracket back on and discovered that it is to short. That must mean that there is a long one in the wrong spot. Should I start pulling head bolts one by one looking for the long bolt? It would seem to me the long bolt would just be extending further into a water jacket and not do any harm and I could simply by a correct head bolt for this location? Any suggestions on how to proceed?

Sam, not sure if these will help.
I don't exactly remember what
the 350 bolt looks like, but here is the
one from my 455. The head bolt has a stud
that either uses a spacer or the bracket itself
will have a built on spacer that goes over the
stud and has a nut to tighten against the bracket.
The first pic is clear but has #2 wire obscuring the nut.
The second pic shows the bolt & nut, but is a bit blurry.

It's been a while since I removed my AC and it's the one accessory I'm least looking forward to reinstalling. Seems to me there are three different head bolts; the long ones, the long ones with the stud end (like in the pic) and the short ones. Did you put the stud bolt in the correct spot? Would the long bolt in the short hole block coolant circulation? Don't judge the pic, it was before I started the restoration.

And that was the most sensible repair I found but let's not get in to that, other than to say it's how I brought her home.

the head bolt on the r/s should have a stud at the top to bolt on the bracket for the a/c, hope the measurments help you,I think the head bolt with the stud is the longer bolt

Be sure to torque those studs properly. I had a head gasket blow on my first rebuild back in the early '80s because I didn't torque one of them properly due to not having a deep enough socket to fit over the stud.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I pulled the valve covers last night and guess what? No stud bolt to be found. This is not the original engine so my guess is the engine was from a non A/c car and I just did not notice when I took it apart? That has been about 11 months ago so possible that I forgot but it just seems like I remember the A/c compressor being attached at that point. anyway I will be scouring eBay for a new bolt. Thanks again for the help.

I would be willing to bet John, 2blue442,
or Scott, oldspackrat, would have exactly
what you need without all the e-bay bs.

Thanks for the tip. Getting ready to bolt my heads on this week. Luckily I have a set of deep-well master mechanics laying around.
