Having a hard time cranking after driving for a while

I have a rebuild oldsmobile 350 engine ( probably a earlier 80s or late 70s 350 engine) with a mild cam in it. I have a edelbrock intake 7411 on with, with a 600 CFM edelbrock carburetor with a electric choke. This car rides good. I have a 89 cadillac brougham. But I have keep tapping the gas a least 5 times to crack it after sitting for a while. Then after driving for a while, I have a hard time cracking it back up. My mechanic told me I need to get rid of that intake because my motor is not a high performance motor. I was looking at the 3711 edelbrock intake. I am scratching my head, because the car rides good. The cracking it up is the problem. Will that intake makes a difference

The intake has nothing to do with it.

When you say cracking, do you mean cranking? As in, turning the engine over?

You don't have fuel injection so pumping the pedal 5 times shouldn't concern you, he right about having the wrong intake but like the other poster said, has nothing to do with what your describing.

if the engine doesnt like to crank when hot you may have to much timing or your starter may suffer from heat soak.

check you engine timing characterisitics and if you have headers you may want to add a heat shield to the starter or goto a mini starter.

all this assumes your battery cables and connections are in good condition. if not start w this

I would start w/ the battery cables and battery posts. Remove the hardware fasteners, clean down to bare metal. Examine cables for tell-tale signs of green/blue oxidation/corrosion. Poor grounding will make it hard to start.

Why don’t we start with the concern first. When you say hard to start. Does it crank over normally as in normal cranking rpm but will not start. Or does it crank over slowly and doesn’t want to start. Each condition is a totally different diagnosis.

Everything is brand new under the hood, I don't know if my carburetor is dumping to much gas, or my distributor is set a little off, I just don't know. I did the comparisons between both intake. 7111 intake is more for a high performance motor, My 350 is a stock with a mild cam in it

so comparing the two intake, which the edelbrock 7111 i have is more for performance, which i don't have. That will not play a role of having a hard time cracking after a while...

Nall I do not have headers, just a stock 350 with a little cam in it. I thought of that to, it may be the timing. I don't know. I just don't want to buy another intake, if the problem will still be the same...

So the motor turns over fast enough but requires the gas pedal pressed down multiple times when the motor is hot correct? The Edelbrock carb is the Carter AFB and AVS carbs with their tweaks. There are Technical Service Bulletins for hard hot starts going back in the 60's when these were factory carbs for Chrysler. One of the solutions is a phonelic or non metal spacer under the carb to stop the boiling with heat, acts as an insulator. The Qjet can also suffer from this but happens when it is overheating or extremely hot outside. The 7111 Performer RPM is a good intake but tall, especially under a regular G body hood, been there before. The carb spacer will not fit, even with a drop base air cleaner. A new 2711 or 3711 is the same price as a new 625 Street Demon carb. It has the Phonelic body but will need calibrated to your motor. A custom tuned Qjet is also an option. I do have a 3711 intake I would part with but it is still on my car. Good luck.
