Hey guys was wondering if I could get some help with suggesions on why my engine is suddenly missing bad. It started out just sputtering when first turned on and started driving but would eventualy go away after the car was driven for a bit. It only happens when giving it gas. It has progressively gotten worse and now doesn't go away, it sputters all the time when I push the gas but when i get to a cruising speed it seems ok. It is a 72 olds 350 still has the points distributor which I will switch out this winter. Any suggestions will help as i plan on changing the plugs first and go from there. Thanks

 

When was the last time it was tuned up??

 

It doesn't have many miles since we rebuilt the motor, after that was done we stripped it down and painted it and didnt get drove for about a year and a half. I may have only put 300 miles on it max.

 

So its been sitting with old gas in it??

 

It did but i have refilled a few times since I've had it painted and didn't have any problems at first.

 

I had same condition...ended up being fuel pump.

 

I'd start by looking at my spark plugs, and then recheck my tune, make sure everything was tight. Look at the simple stuff first!

 

B-man, with the engine OFF, remove your air cleaner, open your choke and slowly move your accelerator linkage. There should be a nice streams of gas shooting into your venturies. Next, look around the top of your coil for carbon tracking, dirt or loose connections. Then check for carbon tracking (can be hard to see) inside the distributor cap or just replace it (possible moisture build up too but not likley). While your in there, remove your rotor and slowly wiggle your distibutor shaft (checking for a worn bushing). This will cause your points to break irratically.
