Hard starting problem

Hi Guys. I need a little input here on the fuel system. I have a 1987 olds 442 with a small block and a new fuel pump. If I park it for a day or two, I have to crank it for a long time to get fuel to the carb. I don't have this problem with my older SBC'S. What is the cure? thanx in advance Ed

If your fuel bowl is leaking and dripping into the intake manifold, it will be empty when you try to crank. This was a common problem with Quadrajets.

Checked that first. The carb is sealed. The fuel line goes empty overnight.

Fuel tank venting

Another possibility, if the fuel tank vent is plugged, then the pump might be pulling a slight vacuum in the fuel tank. That may cause the fuel line to drain backwards a bit, assuming it can pull past the pump. It shouldn't pull fuel from the carburetor, but that might be a partial explanation.

Or you could just have a cracked rubber fuel hose, or some rust pinholes in the lines.

I had an 86 olds years ago with the same problem (305 sbc) at first I switched to the clear inline filter to monitor how much fuel was draining back. I eventually had to change the lines as Eric mentioned.
