Hard Cold Starts, V215 4bbl Roch.

I have a hard time starting a cold engine on my 1963 F85 V8 215 with 4bbl Rochester carb.. If car has been sitting for several days, the only way I can start it is to squirt Starting Fluid into the air filter inlet. It starts ok then and runs good afterwards. Hot starts are not an issue. Mechanic told me to install one way check valve in fuel line as he suspects fuel is draining back away from the carb. Any suggestions on this issue.

Well my question is how long do you have to crank it using the starting fluid? If it starts right up then your mechanic's suggestion is null, as there is fuel in there to keep it running.

I would double check my choke settings, you need to pump the throttle 1 full time prior to starting to set the choke. Also double check your dwell, timing, spark plug gaps, and carb a/f mixture settings.

Your fuel comes out of Greensboro same as mine and it all contains ethanol or other oxygenate. My fuel injected cars are no trouble to start cold on that swill, but my QJet-equipped wagon is often grumpy and hard to start and keep running if it has sat for several days. I believe the fuel is evaporating out of the fuel bowl. Driving it every day I don't notice it as much.

I've gotten to where I spin it over a few seconds to fill the fuel bowl before I ever set the choke. It's less troublesome to start cold that way.

Cold Start issue

After I squirt some Starting Fluid into the air breather inlet, the car will start and will continue to run. Might have to squirt a second time, but after the car fires it does keep running. I'll check choke. Was thinking of the one way check valve also. I have two filters in the fuel line, one just after the tank, and one just after the fuel pump.

make sure your choke is closing completely below 80F.

my car takes constant cranking and pumping until fuel gets back to carb then its fine until it sits longer than a day.

Mine is the same as Stan's. I have another fuel pump at home that might not be as prone to leaking gas back into the fuel lines, gonna try that out.

I would not run two fiters. Like I said if it fires right up and stays running with the starting fluid, you do not have a fuel problem. It's a choke and/ or tune problem.
