Guess that mess

http://www.kijiji.ca/v-view-image.ht...338332&image=0

Seller says it's a 350, doesn't know the year for sure, he was told '68, but the dissy suggests otherwise. I asked him to send me the numbers from under the #1 plug, but let's see if anyone here can come up what it is before he gets back to me. For $100, I'll probably just grab it for the spare parts.

If it has #5 heads,
that would be good.
It does look like a 68
oil fill neck to me.

Intake, carb and dist are
not that year correct, if 68.
I thought all 350's before
75 were painted gold?

With that carb and dist. along w/one shade of blue for all blocks, I'll say 1976.

395558 is the casting for Olds 350, only missing one digit after that - likely a 2
Some clues to look at:
EGR valve - came in around 73
HEI - 1974 and later, but anyone can add/change this

These are correct for 68-70, no?

Technically, yes. That same number was used up until 1976, so of course '68-'70 is a subset of '68-'76.

And then the blue valve covers, again assuming it's all original and nothing has been changed.

Correct if I'd asked for the casting number. Given that I'd asked him for the VIN extract under the #1 spark plug ... not so much. Although the fact that it is a 5558 does interest me more than I'd thought. I'd initially thought to grab it for cheap spare parts ... Carb, dist, fuel pump, maybe even find a serviceable water pump. Parts good enough to test with, or serve as cores to save having to make a return trip to the parts store. Now I'm thinking that it might be worth something towards a rebuild ...

I'm gonna need some way to move the damn thing about tho. I'm not read to be buying this yet. I'm thinking ... http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/ya...0604540p.html# ... 800lbs capacity, and yard tires. Weld up a little angle iron to make supports .... might be doable.

Good deal.

It may be somewhat of a Frankenmotor,
but well worth a hundred bucks.
Six healthy buds a 4X4 and a short
piece of chain, that sucker will go
in and out of a pickup to a garage floor.

If you guys are a little older, which I
do understand completly, take the heads
and intake off first, ha ha, right?

If I had six friends to call on, I'd not have paid for pawl bearers when I did my funeral arrangements. No, this is gonna have to be done the hard way, and quick too. No pickup ... and damned if I'm gonna mark up the CC hauling it about. A $20 u-haul trailer to get it ... he'd better have some way to get it on. Then use my car ramps to run it off and slip it under a tarp behind the shed ... dirt and grass the whole way. A garden cart I can say I got for the missus and I'm just using it for the moment ... more survivable than a 2000lbs engine stand equipped with yard tires appearing out of nowhere. She who must be obeyed might accept an engine full of cheap spare parts as a must have .... more tooling .... yeah, that dog don't hunt.

Damn, that sucks your wife could'nt call
on 6 of your friends to haul you *** to
the cementary if needed.

One of my favorite sayings:
'Uck 'em all but six and make 'em pallbearers.

New pics. He can't make out the stamping, but I see a fat 8 on the heads ... and mismatched plug leads.

per 442.com

(8) - '73 - '76 350 79 411929 Smog heads. Have huge bb-sized 79cc chambers yielding poor compression ratios without extremes of compensation.

But at least an 8 head would be paired with flat pistons. So what the hell had the 5558 block, and 8 heads? Anyone know if you can cut down an 8 into something decent? At least the odds of them being abused is low ...

Have him take some emroy cloth
or sandpaper to the pad, spit on it,
and post a pic.

All '73-'76 350s.

As you said, #8 heads + flat top pistons = good streetable compression ratio.

It depends on the year motor, but assuming the valve covers are orginal, and the motor is orginally that color, is a 72-76 motor.

8 Heads would make it 73-76.

Good for parts, personally, I would look for 5 heads and throw them on that motor and drive it till it breaks. But yes, def worth the $100 he's asking

Looks like a 16 on the intake so I would say 1974 350.

The blue color (if original) on the engine would suggest at least 1975. Up till 1974 the engines were painted gold.
