well as you guessed from the title I'm doing my first engine pull.
pulling a 350 rocket out of a 79 delta 88 royale 2dr.
any tips for a guy in way over his head would be great. I dont have a lift for the car so i gotta do it the old fashioned cherry picker and rolling around on the floor way. I've got most everything disconnected. theres one sensor right infront of the distributor and behind the carb I cant figure out. seams the bolt at the top just spins and spins, even tried just pulling the thing out. just wont budge. I'm trying to see if I have a good view of it in one of my carb removal pictures otherwise I'll snap a pic after work tonight.
Some people pull the engine and trans together some just pull the engine.
some pull the distrbutor first some dont
make sure your cherry picker is long enough, can lift high enough, and can lift the engine.
a tilter makes the job easier
You can lift the engine out w a carb plate (last resort imo) or the engine has a loop in the front of the intake and a hole in the top passenger side back of the block ….or there threaded holes in the heads fr and rr to bolt a chain to (you may need to remove some engine accessories). The last one allows best stability and easy tilting assuming 4 lift points are used.

much thanks. but can I ask, why is the carb plate a last resort? thats how I planned to pull it but if there is an easier and safer way I'm all for it.
picker is a 1ton cap so it should do the trick.

Pay attention to the trans cooler lines. They can get snagged by the block on the way out. And it will bend the crap out of them.
im actually planning on redoing those I think. they appear to go completely under the frame and back up into the tranny. one raccoon and itll get ripped right out how they sit right now.
Yes. Depending on how much detail you require a PIM (Product Information Manual) sometimes referred to as the Factory Assembly Manual (FAM) might be in order.
The carb is held on by 4 small fasteners not meant to hold hundreds of pounds. Many times people have aluminum intake as well. These threads can pull right out of aluminum.
lots of people do it w no problem, but no one wants to drop a engine on there core support.
in addition the carb plate can make the tilter less effective
also despite the overall hoist rating you will likely be at the end of the tools reach effectively lowering the rating. Note the ratings on the hoist in this pic as well as the tilter and engine attachment points.
these are just lessons learned to make the job go easier, id be lying if i said i hadnt pulled an engine using a tree a chainfall and a carbplate
I've always used a chain attached to the heads. Make sure that you use bolts that are the correct length, i.e. will seat all the way in and hold the chain tightly against the cylinder head. Grade 5 are plenty strong for this. Remove the distributor so it will not be damaged accidentally. If pulling the tranny with the engine, a tilter or load leveler would be recommended.
