Engine cuts out
Engine cuts out
I have a 70 cs with a 350 2bbl and I got it out of storage yesterday, and when I drove it home it would cut out and back fire. I would let off the gas for a few seconds and then get it back to 55 60 mph and it would usually come out of it. It kept doing that about every 5-10 miles. It did that last year a few times mostly under acceleration and just once cruising. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Sounds like a fuel issue, that is it runs 'til the float bowls are dry, cuts out and repeats. I've seen an electrical problem act that way, but it was just a "blip" cutout and recover. The fact that it takes time to recover rules out electrical problems.
It was about 30 degrees above normal here in Sioux falls couldn't resist. No fuel leaks did replace the filter looked like some one painted it the color of rust, but no flakes in it. Haven't taken it back on the highway yet but running good around town. It has the original tank and I'm thinking might need to get a new one in the future.
Turns out I have a leaky fuel pump didn't see it with the motor off. I had it warming up in the garage and when I backed it out saw a nice big puddle on my floor. I haven't pin pointed the leak yet but probably will just replace since they are inexpensive.
A leaking gasket where the pump attached to the block will not cause a miss. It will just cause an oil leak. Don't overlook a bad coil. It doesn't happen often and usually takes a long process of elimination to find it. It is one of those things that will drive you nuts if it is the problem. What Fun71 is talking about is the fuel pump leaking fuel internally into the crankcase. Replacing the pump is the only solution. A standard fuel pump is pretty cheap.
ollerich29....I have exactly the same issue with my 64 dynamic 88 2bbl 394. AND YES I GOT IT ON ROAD YESTERDAY AS WELL>>>YAHOO. Streets were swept and it had rained hard the last week so I felt safe driving in March. ( Miracle in MN)
My fuel pump is new, fuel lines new, tune-up 3K miles ago. Carb rebuilt...timing is spot on.
I can travel 200 miles w/o issue and then bang..CUT OUT.
Yesterday it drove fine....then after 20 miles bang ..CUT OUT. Help again>

If you look at your old fuel pump, you will see that any leak past the rubber diaphragm will likely result in fuel getting into the cavity in the mounting flange. This means fuel in the crankcase, so an oil change may be necessary.
