Edelbrock intake leaking coolant at front corner

My intake is leaking right at the front driver side corner and possibly the rear. When I put the intake on the bolt holes barely lined up so I'm suspecting the intake needs to be shaved. I didnt use rtv around the water ports so it might also be that. Any suggestions? Stop leak? Shave the intake and if so how much? Or just new gaskets with rtv?

What intake gasket did you use? Did you use the rubber ends? Having no RTV around the coolant passage ports will probably leak if you use the turkey tray.

I used the fel pro gaskets, no tray. No rubber gaskets, rtv instead

Just put the intake on the 425 I am doing and the instructions with the Fel Pro gasket specified a 1/8" bead around the water ports on both sides of the gasket. I also always brush the rest of the gasket around the intake ports with Permatex Aviation Form a Gasket.

Did you tap some holes for a valley tray in the sb since your using the gaskets only, cause if you didn't do that oil is going to splash up on your intake since you didnt use the turkey tray.

Harry,
Sorry I didnt realize that you dont have the turkey tray

When you take the intake back off to fix it try sitting it in place without the gaskets and see how the bolt holes line up. If they are perfect then you know you need to mill the intake the thickness of the gasket. You should be able to get a good idea that way.

I do this this with the Turkey tray as well. I used RTV on the 4 corners with the SCE intake gaskets that have silicone beads. They are very slight, Edelbrock are the same. If they were more raised it might work without.

Same place as the BB, Dick miller, Mondello etc sell them, but they are for the BB so the SB will need the holes tapped. As far as you and I go, I didn't no the valley pan wasn't an option because of the roller cam and lifters, I wonder if that valley tray would interfere to?

Just an idea, I no nobody likes this Mondello

I bought one of those Mondello valley trays for my 350 and the Edelbrock Performer350 intake manifold wold not sit down onto the heads because the tray was too tall. Lynn had assured me it would fit, said he tried it on his test engine. When I called and told him it did not fit, he gave me some BS about Olds having two different versions of the 350 block and I must have the "other" one.

Where would I tap holes? Oil splashing on the intake is a myth I've read, and if it does it's very minimal. I'll see what my intake looks like when I take it off

This reminds me of when I put a Edelbrock O4B aluminum intake on a 455 Olds back in the early 80's. The manifold I bought used had been sitting for a long time and after I got it on following the directions to the letter, using the turkey tray, it leaked coolant at a corner and leaked vacuum all over! I started it up and realized all those problems and boy was I pissed! Well I let it sit overnight, went out the next day and just thought I would try retorquing it all, Restarted the car and all was OK.! No kidding... I wonder if the manifold took a set or something but then after back on a engine, warmed up and retorqued, it straightened out?? Anyway strange but true... good luck with yours.

Thats probably why he says it will only work with the 7111

Probably so. Too bad he didn’t have that info posted back when I bought one.

The two holes were already there in the lifter valley on my block, I just had to carefully tap threads and BE CAREFUL to not goo too deeply or use too long screws and contact the cam bearing.
