Edelbrock 1411 too much carb?

Edelbrock 1411 too much carb?

Hey Guys, looking for some veteran feedback. I take delivery of my 1969 Cutlass S next week. The motor wa born as a 350 2 barrel. With about 33k miles on the motor the seller replaced the lifters and pushrods, added a edelbrock performer intake with a edelbrock 1411 750 cfm carb. He also installed a summit hei ignition and hooker headers. I asked him how the car likes the carb as it seemed like a lot of carb to me. He said he has it leaned out which sounded normal to me. He is at 2,500' elevation and i live at about 200' elevation, so i am planning for the worst case maybe a carb swap to something smaller (650 cfm) am i on track here or am i concered about nothing that somemtuning might fix? It will work as it's a variable cfm carb much like a QJet but it is made for engines over 402ci. It's been calibrated for a 454-460ci engine (according to Edelbrock). You'd be better off with a smaller carb which would have better throttle response (smaller primaries).

headers will really lean an engine out so i'd say wait and see. does it have the stock cam in it? i think it will work fine but may need tuned.

I had a 1968 350 and I put on a 650 carb and it worked great. I think 750 is too much for a 350. It was an Edelbrock carb with electric choke, but I do not remember which number it was. I want to say 1406, but that doesnt sound right

I tried out the 750 cfm a while back and in stock settings it didn't work well. It worked well with the 1405 and it really likes the 650 holley dp. With the performer intake I think the 750 will be too much with a mild cam imo. I think a 650 vac secondaries would work well.

750 is a real big carb for a near stock 350 IMO

a guide you might consider

this is a formula that has been around for years. I believe it was originally put forth by Holley. It assumes 100% Volumetric Efficiency which is not possible on a stock or nearly stock street engine.

C.I. x R.P.M / 3456 =CFM

In your case 350 x 5000 /3456 = 500 CFM

I used 5000 RPM as a number I assumed you would probably not want to run your engine higher than... good luck with whatever you decide -

Update: as was thought the carb is way too much, it is currently at the leanest setting and im getting rich smoke condition at idle and a cloud following me as i drive down the road. Correction, the intake is a Performer RPM. New question, Holley, Quadrajet, Edelbrock? Lotsa variables, looking for opinions please.

I ran a 1405 on a 350 that ran low 13's and it was good enough. I have one for sale. But I'm running a 650 dp. Now and it works better than the 1405 but its a gas hog. And a looser converter will be needed with a double pumper.

How much are you looking for on the #1405 and how old is it? Stock calibration or? Thanks.

I have the 1405, it works like a dream. I would definitely slap another one on another car if i could.

Car sucks great vacuum (it was gargage with the Q-Jet i had)

All i need to tell you is when you get the edelbrock, open up the top, check the float height, because mine was set badly from the factory. I set the float height to 7/16'' or whatever it should be, and now it runs like a dream.

True tony, the floats appear to be aligned differently, although i notice you have two different types of beer shown in the photo as well....might they have affected your vision/ lol ;0

So THATS why i couldn't get the car to start....

I have it on ebay for 250 buy it now I bought it in june 2011 ran it last season. My ebay I'd is ulises4023 if it does not sell ill sell it to you for 220 if you are intrested pm me

Thanks for the offer Copper, i just decided to get a new 1405. It was $273.00 delivered to my door.
