Hi,

I have read other posts in this forum about points and HEI, and I think based on what I have read I have points, but just want to be sure. Based on the photos, can anyone confirm my assumption? It appears the spark plug gap is different between the two so I want to be sure I know what I have before changing them.

The second part of my question is about the vacuum port. I have the tools now for a carburetor install and tune, as well as the Rochester Carb book by Doug Roe, but where do I connect the vacuum gauge? Can someone point that out in the below pictures?

For vacuum I usually T into the line that runs to the vacuum modulator. It looks like you have points, you can verify it by removing the distributor cap and having a look inside. You need to check them anyway.

 

You have a points-style Delco distributor. Whether it still has points or was converted to an electronic retrofit system can only be determined by removing the distributor cap. The vacuum gauge can be connected to any port that sees full manifold vacuum.

 

The GM spec for the HEI gap was larger but it was based on lean emissions era engines, so on an older engine just use the same gap as specced for the points distributor.
