I've become obsessed with having a big cube small block. How hard is it/how expensive is it to get a D or DX block? i've been cruising CL for cars with them but i dont wanna pay several grand for the car just to get the block.

whats feasible? i've seen all sorta numbers in the 430-450cube range. obviously 442cu in would be cool but since i have no certain horsepower goals i'm open to recommendations.

would i be looking north of 5K to build something streetable? i dunno maybe 400-450 rwhp? i realize i can probably do that cheaper and easier with a gas 350 but then what fun would that be Its not something i'd start on anytime soon but if i could source a block now i would do so. I'm still wrapping up my SBO swap into my monte ss. come to think of it i probably got 5 wrapped up in it and i'm only expecting 300 rwhp.

 

when cruising craigslist you have to try several versions of the post ex: diesel oldsmobile, diesel olds, diesel 5.7, diesel 350, ...ect., I found one in a cutlass ad for parts. spelling is critical, sometimes diesel is misspelled and the ad won't pop up. ebay motors might be a good source also. good luck

 

i did just that.. havent tried mispelling my searches thou. good call. I found a few delta 88s but i didnt think the cars were cheap enough to be worth it just for the engine.

 

Where are you located? That may help to let people know. I have a mint DX block i would think about selling.

With a D or DX you'll need approx. 1K worth of crank work, and you'll still have the big journals.
I'd seriously think about doing a gas block with a welded 330 crank to 3.750 stroke or so. Internals would be way lighter and you can still have cubic inches in the low 400's.
Don't let the big inch DX claims fool you. I've sonic checked 4 or 5 DX blocks and their cylinders are no thicker in the areas that count than a gas block. But with that said, 400-450 at the rear wheels is pretty aggressive, not sure you're going to get there on 5K no matter which way you go.

 

You wont build a D or DX stroker on a $5000 budget.


If you can't up your budget build a gas block with a 330 crank & good internals. Talk to builders like Mark (aka CutlassEFI).

The 440 cubic inches ones have a 425 Oldsmobile forged crankshaft with a lot of machine work. If your really wanting to go this way I have both block and crankshaft. I'm located near the GM Lordstown plant. I'm about 60 miles from Pittsburgh. Pm me but only if you're really interested. I'm retired, I don't have much free time.

They are expensive initially but for extreme Oldsmobile racing probably the way to go. Similar to Batten Oldsmobile heads, pricey because they also needed the intake and exhaust headers but JIMO they were great flowing heads.
