Can't get fuel pump out of my 86 cutlass supreme!

Hey everyone new here but I am in the process of replacing my fuel pump in my 1986 Cutlass Supreme with a 307. Right now I got it loose except for one of the hoses and I had to pull my a/c compressor to the side to get in there but the problem is that the long end of the fuel pump is keeping me from pulling it out what do I do?

Uh, did you remove the A/C and A.I.R. pump brackets first?

turn the engine 1 turn or so, see if that gets the eccentric out of the way

my 2 cents

Just turn the engine ahead using a socket on the crank pulley or bump the starter. That will clear the eccentric & allow you to pull out the pump.

Or...you could pull that 307 & toss it on the scrap heap. Install a 330 a 350 or a 403 along with a good fuel pump & see if that helps!

Step number one; scrap the entire AIR system. Step number two; enjoy how much easier it is to work on your engine with it gone.

If you mean the black metal piece right in front of the fuel pump then no because I couldn't get a bolt off and almost stripped it so i moved the a/c compressor to the side instead to get to it. But I still didn't believe that the fuel pump would be able to make that sharp turn so I never thought that I had to remove it. And sorry I don't usually use the saying much lol

And DoubleV I noticed that when I looked at other Cutlass's

The fuel pump has a long lever that goes into the motor. You have to remove the A/C compressor completely, though you don't need to disconnect hoses, just remove the bolts and move it to the side.

I don't see how that is possible with the thing below the a/c compressor that the belt also goes around keeping me from pulling the fuel pump out

You'll have to remove the belts too

OK, back to basics.

1) Loosen the adjustment bolts on the A/C compressor
2) Remove the belt that goes around the A/C compressor and the A.I.R. pump
3) Remove the bolts holding the A/C compressor and lay it out of the way (do not disconnect the hoses)
4) Remove the A.I.R. pump (the thing below the A/C compressor). This will require removing the pulley to get to the mounting bolts. You will also need to disconnect the large hose on the back of the pump.
5) Replace fuel pump
6) Reverse the process above to reinstall everything.
7) Tighten belt.

Er, yeah, sorry about that...

The trick is that you loosen (but do not remove) the bolts on the pulley BEFORE you loosen the belt. I should have mentioned that before.

Read the instructions below again you are not removing, you taking it loose and shifting the compressor out of the way.

This has nothing to do with the discussion, just couldn’t resist adding some light hearted smart-*** comments

Being a smart-*** is always better than being a dumb-***.

I had forgotten how aggravating a 307 fuel pump job is. For that matter is anything on a 307 easy? Did the f/p on an 81 Pontiac wagon and cursed the people who designed it the whole job. Then when it needed valve cover gaskets I cursed their mamas and grandmas.
