Unhappy Camshaft Alignment / Front to Back

Hello All,

I installed a Crane Cam in my 1968 350 Olds back in the mid 80’s. I think it was called a Crane Fireball Cam. The specs are long lost. The engine has very little run time on it since then. It was a newly re-built engine, new pistons and the whole deal, I just didn’t like the cam that was in it.

I have the top end apart and the lifters don’t seem to line up with the cam lobes. The lifters are running approximately 20% off the lobe towards the front of the engine. Meaning that it looks like the cam is too far back in the engine.

I don’t see how this can be. Wouldn’t the timing chain and sprockets hold the cam in its proper position? (a new Crane double roller timing gear and chain set was installed with the new cam).

What holds the cam in the proper position, front to back?

Thanks in advance for the Help !! ,
Bert

The lifters will not sit completely on the cam lobes and is held in place by the distributor. The reason the lifters are offset is to allow them to spin in the bores.

Thanks !!

I think I'll skip out of work early and go home and put it back together.
