Cam timing

I got a delivery from Howards cams. Was a bit disappointed, because they did not send a proper cam card like Comp and Lunati does. Need to do the timing only according to knowledge, that intake centerline should occour 106° from TDC. Not as much information as I would like to have.
Did some degreeing yesterday, and found out intake centerline was 110° after TDC when assembled to zero key. I will try the advanced key tonight. Timing set is cloyes +-4°, so it should set right.

It could be the Cloyes timing set, which one? Supposedly even some of the Cloyes sets aren't accurate. The 9 way Billet Cloyes set is supposed to be the most accurate.

It's not a billet one, just basic Cloyes double roller set with three key-slots.

0, 4°retarded and 4°advanced. Seems there is a mis-match of 4 degrees between Howards and Cloyes.

Not necessarily. Cam could've been ground straight up

What does this "straight up" mean?

If the cam has a 110 lsa then "straight up" means the icl is also 110.

I asked a cam card and they soon replied(quick respond, credits for that) with following. I undestand this cam is intended to be assembled intake centerline 106° ATDC? To get it that way, for some reason I have to assemble the Cloyes timing set to 4° advanced position.

Don't even think about what the timing gears say - degree it to a 106* centerline by matching up events on the cam card and call it a day. It sounds like you are already there.

The advance/retard marks on cam gear sets are not to be trusted, always checked. I have had to drill cam gears in the past and use offset bushings to degree cams. Not sure who else has them but I think I've gotten mine from Dick Miller Racing. They require a 1/2" hole in the cam gear and I think come in a set of 5.

That's exactly my plan. Really seems that there's no reason to trust the marks. Cheking/degreeing is a must!
