Believe I need to rebuild 371 rocket..Sugg?

Hey guys, Brand new here.....

bought a 57 super 88 - 2 door coupe... rare model.

compression test went fair, few cylinders are low, 115-120's others 150.
she runs and drives...but SMOKES!

my question is, being 28 with limited funds to spend..
what route would you suggest?

looking to rebuild motor, but told i should expect to dish out 5k....
or, find a similar motor, maybe OLDS 350 in the mean time swap,

THEN, rebuild current motor at a later date and switch back...

whats your thoughts?

Any other motors i can keep my eyes open for that would work well?

THANKS FELLAS

Either you probably have worn piston rings or worn valve seals. Check them out before you dump boatloads of money into it

I believe the rings are gone. Valve seals were worked on prior to purchase.
Do you know if motor rebuild parts are readily available?
I have seen some items needed..

Engine parts are extremely easy to get. Ross Racing, Kanter, Rock Auto. Just get two or three credit cards on standby

You should figure about $600 a hole for the economy build. ( no special cam or speed equipment).

When you pull the heads check and see if you can get away with just a bearing ring and valve job with out a re-bore , not the best rebuild but sometimes you can get away with doing this if It's not to far gone....Tedd

Thanks guys, yeah my buddy and I are gonna pull motor and trans next week.
We are electricians with minor auto mech skills .. Haha

Sending off to a motor shop that's very reputable in New Hampshire..
If I could keep rebuild next to 2k I would stoked..

Motor runs and drives.. But you know those machinists .. If something is a 100th off .. They require a whole overhaul..

Do you guys recommend a light tranny rebuild? Mine currently has a hard shift between 2/3? The rest are smooth.. But, tans also leaks like a stuck pig.. Tell them to just re gasket?

Much thanks again for the 411 guys
