Air cleaner height

Hi friends,

Does CCC and non-CCC quadrajet air cleaners have any difference in shape where it mounts to the air horn?
I mean, can they be interchanged?
Next question is, what are the simplest ways to reduce the air cleaner height? Mine is almost 4" tall from bottom to top.

Thank you

Your housing looks awful tall. I will measure the one on my Wife's 84 Riviera this evening. I know it uses a lot shorter filter element.

It's the same as the factory A348C element. 3.5" high.

The air cleaner appears to have the aftermarket air cleaner lid on it. Not sure of the shape on it if that's causing an issue, but I can't see how if you can bolt it on.

Stock air cleaner? Stock carb, stock intake?

Then the issue has to be with the engine mounting. No telling why it should be hitting the hood. It also doesn't look like it is sitting in a 1987 Custom Cruiser either.

I wonder if it is the aftermarket chrome lid? Here is a pic of the factory 307 air cleaner I modified to become a dual snorkel most 307's had. That air cleaner from what I saw working on these cars in stock form was the factory air cleaner.

k,
Here are some pictures of the air cleaner on the 307 in my Wife's 84 Riviera. Toronado would be the same. As you can see it is much shorter, maybe 3" at the most. It is on a CCC Q-jet. It uses a A329C filter. I dont know if it would be correct on your 88 but it might help. The lid is pretty much flat.

Hope this helps,

Correct, this isn't sitting in a custom cruiser, custom cruiser actually is a donor, I keep that in signature, so it is easy when communicating in this forum.
That air cleaner lid is a corvette lid, but it is identical to the stock air cleaner lid, which has rusted through.

Stock air cleaner? Stock carb, stock intake? All yes. I am wondering what easier option I have to lower this height.

Thanks heaps for the images Bill !!
My air filter itself is 3.5" tall, it is a Denso 1433409 (bought from rock auto)
I just noticed the A329C filter you mentioned is only 2.5" tall, while the rest of the dimensions are the same.

Perhaps I could relocate the mouth of the intake duct to the bottom edge of the air cleaner housing and cut out a lip at the top and use a 2.5" tall filter you mentioned.

Should make measurements with the rotten lid.

You could use the air cleaner I showed ? Or possibly just the flat lid off one like mine and the shorter filter. Hard to say what will work without actually being there to try it.

Either that or an aftermarket lower profile one.

What vehicle is it in and how much more room do you need ?

Maybe something like this :

This is a hot country and I don't want hot air to be sucked in by the engine.
I prefer the factory look and also the possibility of cold air intake as factory intended.

I added few more info for the previous reply.

Do you think you could find a flat cover like the one on mine ? That might work with the shorter filter. What would be chances of finding an entire air cleaner assembly like mine ? I know where one is but getting it to you would be a problem

Thank you!

You are spot on, that's the issue, shipping is expensive than the actual item when it comes to parts.
I will see what I can do, maybe I can chop the rusted out older lid and make it flatter, or something.

Glad I found the part number for a 2.5" tall air filter, thanks to you.
