68 Cutlass Transmission

Hello all,
Looking at purchasing a 68 Cutlass S in my area. Did a pre buy inspection, lots of tranny fluid on the bottom of car, definitely leaking but could not tell from where. Also, it was slipping on the test drive. Could be a seal but was wondering what the ballpark cost would be to have it (the tranny) replaced, if it came to that.
Thanks

I have a good working trans from a 69' here. Not sure where you are at. Maybe not worth it to ship.

It cost me $1100 to get my THM 400 rebuilt 5 years ago. There was some extra work that had to be done when it was rebuilt that brought up the price to the $1100 mark but it works great. I would rebuild what you have (if it is rebuildable) before replacing it - just a personal opinion. Like the sign just inside the front door to my house says, "The opinions expressed by the husband of this house are not necessarily those of the management".

If you are going to rebuild make sure to get a written quote. I was told under $1000, but when i got my bill it was 3500. Found out later on its just another junk yard tranny
