403 head bolt install

The ARP bolt instructions say that
if any bolt protrudes into the
water jacket to coat the threads with
rtv. Anyone run into this. Do any of the
bolts protrude into the water jacket?

Thanks,
Gary

This comes up a lot. The ARP generic instructions are written for Chevy motors. All Olds head bolt holes are blind. No sealer is needed. Prove this to yourself by using a piece of coathanger to probe the bottoms of the bolt holes.

I like to give a shot of air down the holes to clear out any debris at the bottom ... that'll tell you too.

Another question:
I see that that the ARP instruction say to torque the bolts to only 100 lbs. I read that the 403 requires the head bolts to be torqued to like 130lbs even with the 350 heads on it. Which is right?

The 403 uses ½" head bolts where the older 350's use 7/16" and thus a lower torque amount.
So when using 350 heads on a 403 torque the bolts to the ½" amount.
