403 alternator and AC

I have this 403 that im putting in a 1986 olds cutlass. The problem that Im having is the AC pulley and alternator pulley is on the same groove. I believe my alternator pulley should be on groove 1 close to engine.. Can anyone help me to what brackets that I need to make this happen.

Well, pictures would help figure out what you have done wrong.

You MUST use the water pump, pulleys, and accessory brackets as a matched set. Either use all the parts off the 307 from that car originally or use all the parts from the 403. They lined up from the factory, so obviously you have something installed incorrectly. FYI, if your 403 came out of a Trans Am, the F-body brackets are completely different from those used by Olds and are not compatible with a G-body installation.

The alternator and power steering fits great. What im wondering is there a such bracket with or without AC. Im using a vintage air bracket and compressor on the passenger side. the belt diagram shows AC on the outside, Power steering in the middle and Alternator on the inside. I used the power steering pump and alternator brackets from the 307. The Air compressor cannot come forward or backwards. only the alternator can move backwards..im just stumped right now. Ill take some pictures when I get home..

And there ya go...

What water pump length is this bracket designed to use? What pulley is it designed to use? I'm willing to bet this bracket is NOT designed to be used with the 307 accessory drive.

FYI, I just installed the Sanden compressor and bracket from Classic Auto Air on my 67 Delta. That bracket has about 2" of fore-aft adjustment in the compressor position. My Delta uses the 5.1" water pump with A/C and this lines up just fine. Most later Oldsmobiles use the 6" pump and there is plenty of adjustment to accommodate that also. I have no experience with the Vintage Air bracket, but the one I have works great. Frankly, if anything, there are so many degrees of freedom that you have to think for a while as to how best install.

Yes I also have the sanden compressor. so maybe I should look at the adjustment on that end. The power steering pump mounts to the bolt coming off the timing indicator and also to a stud coming off the water pump. the side bolts up to the side of the engine with a spacer..

There are two studs on the front cover, one on the water pump and the one on the timing tab, in addition to the bolt on the side of the block. There are two spacers, the one on the side of the block and one on that lower stud on the timing tab.

Classic auto air, thats the one I needed as well, puts AC belt on the innermost groove. They will sell just the bracket even though its listed in a kit only. Should be ac, alt, power steering belt.

Awesome. Olds have so many variations in the belt system, it can be very frustrating, any one of them off and big time issues. I just encountered it on my 260, proper water pump for non A/C, checked the casting number, pretty sure matching pulleys, not the original 1970 pulleys the motor came out of and for some reason the alternator ended up in between grooves. I spaced it out and fixed the squealing and occasional belt breaking. As Joe said, everything must match or there will be issues. I modify to make the accessories work with what I have.
