350 Carb Question

350 Carb Question

Right now, as my 1968 stands, I figured out that I have a 1973 350 olds in there with #8 heads, which to be frank, kinda sucks. But I've recently purchased a 425 block to start a build on. In the meantime however, I'd like to get my 350 running decent and I've debated even swapping the #8 heads for 5 heads which I would imagine would just be nothing more than a head swap and that should give it a kick in the pants feeling. The problem is, I think I'd def like to pursue the 425 build but I do go back and forth between rebuilding the 350 and doing the 425. However, he's the question: I would like to replace the carb in the 350 to get it running good and I'd like to buy something that can work on both builds and from what I've read, I thought a 750 carb would work. It might be little much on the 350, but right now it has a comp cam (No idea which one) true duals, and headers along with a TH400 tranny. I'm between like 3 options. Take a 700-750 cfm Q jet and rebuild it and put that on the 350 until I'm done the build (since the build is going to take quite a while), a holley street avnger 770, or I've heard good things about quickfuel carbs and something in that 700-750 range. Any ideas on this and where are some good places to buy quickfuel carbs? I just think those three seem to be most recommended out of the posts I've read people building the 350's seem like they're using 700-750 cfm carbs as well so it would work with either setup.

350 Carb

I'd stick with some thing in the 750 range. Maybe a little big for the 350 but overall a good choice.

A lot of guys will say that a big carb will automatically run rich. WRONG!!!!!!!!!
If it's jetted right then it won't matter. Will your throttle response suffer from a carb that's too big? Yes but that doesn't automatically mean it'll run rich.

With that said, I'm sure you'll get plenty of good advice here.

Any advice on which of those three carbs would be best?

Q-Jet was used in all 4 barrel 350 applications for good reason.

Unless you already have one of the others, there is no reason to change from a Q-Jet.

Your other two options are based on the old Holley design. This means one must "tune" them to the application.

i purchased a 600 holley for my 307, but i just came across a 350 that Im gonna drop in. Is it worth it???? on the 350???
