330 heads

330 heads
I have a 1964 f85 330 2 barrel. The car had been sitting for over 20 years so I’ve just got it running. I had a Holley 600 4 barrel laying around so I found a Edelbrock performer intake for it. The guy also has some #5 heads for sale for $50 bucks. Would these work on my 330 or be worth putting on? My heads are the #1 rocker shaft.

The adjustable rockers were fact a better advantage, however it does not mean your #1 heads are boat anchors.
What are your goals for the engine?
Adding a 4v and intake to your 2v engine will likely not make it perform better without other modifications.

I don't think there is a ton to be gained by installing #5 heads unless there is a problem with the ones that are on it now. Are they #1's ?
While trying to get replacement rocker shafts many many years ago for a 330, an Olds dealer said if we cannot find them to use the next generation 65 and up rocker set-up. Can the shafts just be replaced with 65 and up rocker and pivots?
Thanks in advance...

My goal right now is to put a new intake on it, put new seals and gaskets in the engine, I’d like to put a cam in it. Nothing big but something to make it sound better and give it some more power. I’m also going to take the heads off to get them cleaned up. I just see people talking about the #5 heads and didn’t know if I’d benefit putting those on vs keeping the #1 heads on it now.

As said keep the heads unless they are completely wasted. Just pull the shafts and look for excessive wear. Add a Performer or RPM intake and your 4bbl of choice tuned to your motor. Remember you need a 45 degree cam bank angle camshaft. They are available, just realize the difference. Use a quality timing set like the Cloyes billet 9 way set and degree the cam.

Consider doing a leakdown test BEFORE disaasembly so you will know in advance if a cylinder is leaking and where the leak is located. If rings are leaking you may choose to fix all or one cylinder depending on your goal. This helps to avoid pulling the heads cleaning things up and later learn that the rings are leaking.
Good luck and glad to hear your keeping the heads original...pictures???

Camshaft bank angle may be the make it or break it. Talk to CutlassEFI about a custom cam because I don't THINK anyone has any off the shelf 45* camshafts. ALSO, the #5 head combustion chambers PLUS the additional .023 from the replacement head gasket will push your compression ratio closer to 8.0:1 which isn't ideal.... Find a set of #3 heads with 5/16 bolt holes (pedestal mount rockers) and go from there. You can use a set of Scorpion or Ford roller rockers. Also...that Performer intake is close enough to a factory intake but weighs 30lbs less. The Performer RPM would be a better match. Sounds like a lot to take on but you may be setting yourself up for disappointment by just swapping a set of heads on it.
