324 / 371 help. Blow by question

O.K. I may have been wrong with my combo, to refresh every ones memory I have a 1956 olds 88. It has a 324 block with 371 heads and intake. I know it shouldn't work but it was running good before I disassembled it to re-seal it. The only thing I could figure is that someone milled the intake to fit? but anyway the problem I have is that now that its back together and running I have allot of blow by coming from the down draft tube and oil filler. checked compression and got 189 psi on all, give or take a pound. Dose any one have any ideas? could my intake be off and causing it? Iv put 400 miles on it since I put it together and it still smokes the same. not out of the exhaust but just the draft tube and oil filler. after running it abit after I shut it off it will still smoke for about 8 mins out of the oil filler tube. hasn't burnt any oil and the smoke smells like exhaust, not oil? Im kinda at a loss any help would be appreciated. Thanks. also like every one else Im on a budget so taking it apart and rebuilding it again dont sound to fun. but I do have the stock heads and intake that I could redo and install but dont want to spend the money if thats not the problem.

I have the 57 371 intake on the 371 heads wich are also 57. I picked up the correct valley pan but the one thats on it now is just dented in to clear the intake. I have the 57 exhaust manifolds on it but currently thay are ran over into single exhaust, dont have any issues with the power steering box, going to go to duels later in life when I get everything else squared away. I took it apart to a short block to re-seal it, did the timing cover, oil pan, new oil pump, main seals, valve cover, valley pan, intake and exhaust.

Hey; I wonder if maybe the intake to cyl. head (gasket) at the cross-over is leaking into the engine hence the smell of exh ?

With the hood up and the engine warm and at idle are there any signs of the pulsing of the emissions coming from the oil filler and/or vent tube? Is there any evidence of impurities in the oil?

A break at the bottom of the crossover passage would let exhaust gasses into the valley. The result would match your symptoms.

If so, your 303/324 intake should cure it.

Great, that sounds very possible. if I run the 324/303 intake that I got, should I order intake gaskets for the 303/324 or the 371? also will it run ok with the difference in port size from intake to head? Thanks again for the help and info.

Per post #4, check the condition (and indents) of the existing gaskets, first.

371 gaskets might be the better choice for use with the early manifold.

You might lose a little power above 3000 or so.

Hi,

Did you ever find out what was causing the smoke out of the down tube & oil filler?

Thanks

But it was good to see Norm still in the game even though he no longer posts himself. His info is always good, but he was a bit contagious... Tedd

When somebody dies, if you can't say something good about them then just don't say anything. Norm did have lots of knowledge on first generation Olds V8's.
