307-403 or something better.
I have a 1986 pontiac pariseanne with a olds 307 and 7a heads. I have the 700r4 trans with I have no clue rear gear. I am planning on rebuild a motor to put into my car before I head off to college to be alittle more reliable. I was thinking of going to the junk yard and pickign up another 307, rebuilding and dropping in along with a rebuilt 700r4. But as we all know the 307 is no power monster. I am wondering if I can mybe direct swap or for cheap swap a 350 rocket or a 403 in.

If want to make it faster you will need to change the gears. Even with a stock engine you can change the gears and see a big improvement. The 350 or 403 either would make for a good engine to swap too.

What cars should I look for in the junk yard to fing a 350 or my goal a 403. My dads buick had one but wouldnt that be a buik 403 or an olds 403. I am a ford guy and have had this car for about a year now but jsut now am starting research for upgrading the slug. Would a shift kit in the stock trans be fine or would a complete rebuild and or upgrade be needed.

All 403s were sourced from Oldsmobile. They were used in 1977-1979 B-body and C-body Olds, Buick, and Pontiac cars and the 77-79 Trans Ams.
