after a little carb cleaner seems to be running a bit smoother. the shot below is the carb running at idle after about 5 minutes. granted it's a rough idle but it isn't stalling.





the adjustment screws in the base of the carb - turning them which way does what?




driving up hills yesterday the car was struggling to get gas it seems. it wouldn't quite stall but it would hesitate and jump a bit. i plan on running some 93 through it over the next day. i know some new plugs / wires would help - any other suggestions?

just from the supplied pix:
i'd say you may have a carb. rebuild in your future, the airhorn gasket looks thoroughly soaked. i think you'll be wasting your time and money running high $ gas through it. turning the idle mixture screws in(clockwise) leans the idle, turning them out(counter-clockwise) richens the idle mixture. idle mixture has zero effect in any other mode than idling.

no, i don't know. you have a 4G-series carb. which may make a bolt-on solution more difficult without an adapter plate. have that one rebuilt, or rebuild it yourself(not for the faint of heart). when they're done right, they're decent carbs.

First thing I'd do, is check/replace all the vacuum lines, especially the one to the vacuum advance canister.
Time is not friendly to rubber. Replace anything brittle.
Then, while running, unplug that hose, which should reduce the idle a bit, plug the carb outlet, and adjust the idle metering screws to the smoothest idle whle turning clockwise, or, if you've a vacuum guage, the highest idle vacuum.
Plug it back in, and away you go!
Might be a good time to check the timing, too.
Re-do if you change the timing!

rickman - i'm new to this but fairly mechanically inclined, where would the vacuum advance canister be?

 

On the distributer - if that's the hose that goes to the l/side of the carb, by the fuel inlet, I can tell, from the picture, it's toast!
Save some aggrevation, and sketch all of them first, many have gotten lost!

 

just did plugs, wires, and a bit of a carb adjustment and it's running pretty well! i have a little drip coming from the weephole on the water pump - so i'll have to look into a new one soon i think.

 

Had one of those carburetors NEW in the DELCO box last year -- sold it to a girl in the hobby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can supply you a carburetor kit in the new-ethanol gas-compatible material when you are ready to do a rebuild.......

At the library to use the computer -- would have to look up your water pump later..........

I have the 303, 324, early 371 Water Pump from 1949 - 1962 BRAND NEW --- but I believe the 215 is radically different -- I have the book......
