1990 Cutlass Ciera engine question

All I know about this engine is that it is a V6. My question is about the serpentine belt. does this belt run the camshaft as well? should it break do I have to worry about timing? How do I check it for wear and when do I need to replace it?

Car seems to run strong. Over 200K and still going strong.

No. It only runs the accessories. The cam is driven by a chain under the front cover. Change it to your heart's content. Look for cranks on the underside as an indication that it needs to be changed.

Joe is correct.

If you have a V6, chances are you have on of the early 60* V6 engines in there. Very good engine

Not sure what engine it is. I know it's a V6. says "3300" on the top in big letters. Fuel injected. I really don't trust fuel injection. How much MPG should I be getting?

Then you have a 3300 a very good engine, I use to own a 90 Buick Century that had a 3300. I remember getting around 25-28 mpg with it. The fuel injection system on this engine is simple, and easy to work on and very dependable. I would suggest getting a service manual if you plan on doing your own repairs.

That's the 3.3 liter version of the venerable Buick V6 (more commonly seen in 3.8 liter size).

The engine itself is really clean. Previous owner must have really taken the time to care for the engine. Somehow I would still feel better with a carburetor. Anyone know if the AC system uses the old coolant or new? I need to have it recharged.

The 3300 and the 3800 did have a nylon cam gear. They are an interference engine. They are a great motor but will wipe out the valves if the cam gear comes apart. At 200k miles I would think about having it done. Especially if you are planning on keeping the car.

Would that be as easy as removing a cover on the front and replacing a chain like on a V8? How much would a mechanic charge for the service?

Yes, same principal as the v8, just a little tighter quarters since it is transverse. Parts and labor I would ball park it around $5 bones. Pm me if you want a closer estimate. I'll look it up for you at the shop tomorrow.

$5 bones as in $500 bucks? I haven't seen that much money in a long time.
