It can be complicated to do it in the car. In my honest opinion its simpler to yank the engine out and do it that way. you have more room to install the cam and degree it if you choose to .

It can be done in the car, but you have to remove all the obstructions in front of the engine to allow you pull and install the cam straight into the engine.

IM not saying it cant be done in the car but pulling the engine is more simple in my opinion.

Your 350 can be capable of 400 hp with the right work and combination of parts.

Find a 455 and build it. 400 hp from a 455 is relaitvely simple and can be done for just as much as a 350 and it builds much more tq. If i had a car that heavy i wouldnt even mess with a 350 even though im a die hard small block guy.

Just gotta pick your poison. I built an SBC this summer for a friend of mine for his 68 chevelle and it cost more than 355 olds. Any small block in a car that big will be a slouch unless you have a lot of hp. I had a mid 13 sec engine ( 350 olds ) i put in my dad's 77 pontiac bonneville and its more like a mid 14 sec car now.

Copper cutlass...I am newer to this site and wanted to ask about what you said regarding getting the 350 to 400hp. I have a 1970 cutlass supreme convertible. I have a 10 bolt rear end don't know the gears, th400 trans, stock cam and heads, 4 barrel holley 650, edlebrock intake, long tube headers dual exhaust ..... Any suggestions on what else I can do to get to 400 HP. I bought the car this way FYI only owned it for 1 1/2 years. I put a post on the newbie section with photo too. Thanks in advance and y'all rock ive uses this sit to fix gas gauge, rebuild my suspension and other things.

The short answer is compression and a lot of camshaft. The long answer is start a new thread asking for build recommendations instead of hijacking this one. I was hesitant to even post this as it will likely assist in derailing the original thread.

Questions on 71 350 rebuild

I see you rebuilt your 72 350, which has the same low compression issues that my 1971 conv has. My 71 came with a 4barrel quadrijet. How many HP is your motor now? What mods did you do? I’ve been told to get the Edelbrock 7111 manifold, a street brawler carb ( maybe leaning towards keeping my Rochester 4 barrel ) Mahle pistons with new scar rods a TQ40 cam..hooker headers. Suggestions? My name is Bobby

The build you are referring to is my last one. It was sold. I made about 360 HP give or take. The combination is on this forum somewhere. But it was very basic. I used a Holley 3310 750 carb.
