I'm guessing that is why I see people add to the thread with PM sent.
I'm new but that's my guess, so the thread OP gets a message in e-mail. - Steven

Used to be the default. I just set it again for all new registrants, unfortunately if it wasn't default when you registered, you'll have to turn it on yourself.

Since we're discussing PM's, is there any way to automatically keep a copy of sent PM's without having to remember to check the box every time? I almost always forget to check it. It would be handy to have the whole conversation available to review. Thanks, Mike

You bet there is Mike. Go to UserCP, Edit Options (left nav), scroll down near the bottom and you'll see one called "When sending private messages the forum can make a copy of the message in your Sent Items folder." Click the box next to "Save a copy of sent messages in my Sent Items folder by default." and you're done, it'll save a cope from then on.
