Looks like most are 0.060

 

its a 1972 350 olds motor my hanes book doesnt say

 

HEI or points?

 

Have you tried asking your local auto parts store? They should be able to give you the correct gap.

 

my parts store says 0.040 hei i belive. also when im shopping for headers what other cars are exact same fit. camero? firebird? are they the same size as the 442 big block?

No 442 big block exist! You have a 350 in an A-body car. Like a Chevelle/ Malibu, Lemans/GTO, Skylark/GS. Thos would be some sismlar models

 

Points gap .032, HEI gap .045

 

FSM should say '030" for the '72 engine.
FSM should say .045" for the '74 engine.

The extra .015" is to fire the lean mixtures in the emission controlled '74, and up, engines.

.032" will work fine in any, non emissions, application.

.035" if you have points, .045" if you have HEI

i was running .050 in my motor? but also i have hei and an msd 6a box so, that was ok right?

wow this is an old thread but. Hei has a coil mounted directly on top of the distributor. Points usually had the old can style coil mounted else where.

 

And the diameter of the distributor is larger on the HEI...

I know this is an old thread but I’m in sort of the same situation. I have a 64 cutlass with a 330
4 barrel and the 442 cam. The car was a 290 HP engine so I’m guessing that it is the same as a 442 engine now with the 442 cam. It has
aftermarket harmonic balancer that was supposed to be for a 64 or 65, the problem is the timing marks are on the left side. So timing it has been a challenge to say the least.
I’VE been using a vacuum gauge to try and set it.car has Thornton exhaust manifolds with true duals and a pertronix ignition. The plugs are R45S. My problem is where to set the timing and should I go with R43S plugs? The carb is a stock one from an automatic and the car is now a 4 speed. Also should the plug gap be 35?
