71 442 cam swap

i have a 71 442 with a 455 and i want to swap the cam for something more high performance, but i've heard that in doing that i could cause other annoying problems such as a lurching idle and many others. So i was hoping to get some advice from someone who has had good luck with high performance cams. thanks a lot

71 442 cam swap

i have a 71 442 with a 455 and i want to put in a high performance cam and valvetrain, but ive heard that doing that leads to some lurching while idleing as well as other problems. I was hoping that someone who has had success with could point me in the right direction. thanks a lot

What size cam did you put in? Most performance cams are not going to idle smooth. You also need to run more intial timing than stock. Also is this a auto trans? If you put in a lot off cam, and while in gear it does this, you may need a higher stall convertor?

Well i havent decided what size cam yet, so it still has the stock one in right now. and my timing is a whole different issue, i'm starting to think that the genius i bought the car from thought he had a little more knowledge than he acutally did because there are some pretty "mickey mouse" fixes etc. throughout the car. Also yesterday i bought a Munice 4 speed for it so i'm pretty sure that i'll be putting that in the car. thanks a lot for replying.

Try something like this: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...2&autoview=sku

This should put you in the performance ball park, and not give you any drive-ability problems. Stick with Crane, their cams are top notch. Stay away from Comp cams, they're better set-up for Chevy. Good Luck!
