Newbie with a few questions

Hey guys I’m kind of mixing parts to get what I want my cutlass to look like I have a1971 cutlass supreme that I’ve been looking for grilles for the last two months. The two grilles that I’m interested in are the grilles in the cutlass supreme and the grilles in the 1971 cutlass s but I can’t find any in good enough condition that I don’t have to do major work to get them to look good so my question is can I fit 72 cutlass supreme grilles in a 71 radiator support if so what modifications would I have to do any information witch be helpful thanks

Hey, Norell, Welcome to Classic Oldsmobile!

There are LOTS of folks on this site that enjoy helping others with sourcing parts for repairs and rebuilds. I would suggest putting up an ad in the Parts Wanted section of this site. It you come up empty handed from this, I think most of the aftermarket reproduction parts sellers probably have what you are looking for.

Good luck with your project, and Post some Pictures , we LOVE 'em! :-)

It's been done but I'm not sure what mods were made to make it happen. Note: the 72 radiator support has small bumps where the grills fit next to the head lamp bezels because 72 grills sit forward in the stone shield and are flush with the front of the hood, whereas all 71 grills are recessed a couple inches. Also keep in mind that 72 grills are plastic construction and somewhat easy to break. 71 grilles are made from pot metal.

Give Nick (442crzy) a PM. I'm sure he has something that you might like. You may not know how to navigate this forum very well yet, so just clik this blue link and it will take you right to his Private Messaging (PM)
BTW, I just saw this thread so disregard my question in your other one.

Just did a quick search on the site. This link will take you to a car being parted out. It's a 72 sedan with 71 Cutlass S Grills that can be cleaned and painted.

I think any '72 Supreme grill I've seen in a '71 core support was a friction fit with the top of the support. I'd suspect that installation is prone to failure due to flexing and vibration. On the up side, the '72 Supreme grills seem to be easier to source (at least in my area).

The '71 Cutlass S grill is plastic and very difficult to find in good condition (they're not reproduced). The '71 Cutlass Supreme grills are pot metal.

Personally I like the look of the 71 Cutlass S grills. The blacked out 72 CS grills? Meh. If that one source doesn't work out, check the other. The 71 grills are out there and unfortunately neither the CS or S are reproduced. The 72 grills on the other hand are, but pricey IMO.

I didn't realize that (as VI Cutty pointed out) that the 71 S grills were plastic. In a way that's good because that means they can be fairly easily repaired.

As I pointed out in response to your same question on FB, the 72 grills can be forced into the 71 core support, but it won't be pretty. They are likely to be damaged when the body flexes while driving. Here's the photo from above with 72 grills in a 71 core support.

Here is a correct 1972 core support. Yes, I realize that the grills on this car are ironically damaged. That's what I get for stealing a photo from the web.

And here are 1971 grills in a 1971 core support
