1959 Ninety Eight Holiday Scenicoupe barn find

Finally got my barn find out in the daylight. Original paint, completely untouched car, with some character, but not a trace of rust.. amazingly solid car!

As the old saying goes, "you done well" on this car. This will be a fun one to follow. I am not a big green person but on some cars it looks really good and this is one of them. I really like the 59's.

Wow! I'd be inclined to leave it as a surviving original. I was surprised to see the location of the PW switch on the passenger side.

It appears yours is missing the rear emblems and side trim. Are they maybe in the trunk?

This is exactly what I will do. The plan is to make it safe and reliable, and leave the rest as is, scars and all. The car is so solid, there is absolutely no need for a restoration and they are only original once.

I'm intrigued by that Safety Spectrum Speedometer. Does it still work as designed?

I have them. They were in a box with the car.. As a matter of fact, I think i have doubles and more of most of the trim. Only parts missing are the rear wheel lip moulding on the driver's side and original 14 inch steel rims (car has 15 inches rims on it now).

I will have to get the car running before I can tell you. Motor turns over, but it needs a good tune up and brakes before I really crank it. This is a true barnfind, and she has not seen the road in decades.

That's great news! Staring at your pictures and the ads, the technology advances from my 56 to your 59 are just amazing for such a few years difference.

Anyone here know if I could send the data plate info and serial number of this car to have someone at GM or else to decode? I know the car was originally sold in the USA, but I would love to know more.

That is one sweet Olds! I love that car! Along with the 59 Buick, these have to be one of my favorites. I used to have a 60 Super 88 which was nice, but it didn't have quite the same coolness factor the 59 does. Great score, glad to hear you're keeping it original!

I will say in advance that I'm not that familiar with the decoding of the 50's cars. What I did find on the paint though is:
E - Emerald Mist Poly (Lower body)
F - Crystal Green (Upper body)
F - Crystal Green (this is a reasonable guess, but likely Crystal Green wheel color)
Here's the 1959 Paint colors on a paint swatch


Trim 387 is a green theme cloth woven green with vinyl separations pattern. I can't find the vinyl pattern for the light green accents.

837 likely indicates 2 door holiday coupe
BK822 = BK = Kansas City production, 822 will be the number given to the body by the KC Fisher body production

I'm open to anyone who knows this stuff better taking the reigns and bringing it home.

Indeed, our cars look very similar! I am not going to touch the interior, as it is entirely original and in very good shape. Only thing I will do is replace the headliner.

On the outside, I am missing the rear wheel arch mouldings, and that's it. The rest is complete and in good shape.

If you look at the 2 cars, the restored one is missing the stainless OLDSMOBILE trim on the back. The attachment holes are easy to spot. The emerald mist does a decent job drawing the eye away from that though.

I have an extra one right here for that car!.. Shipping such a thin and long piece to Australia would be a very expensive endeavour, though..

It would look so complete then. Just have to pack extra careful. IDK what the cost to Oz is or whether 5998downunder is interested. You guys should PM each other and find out.

I re-used the roof boards after stripping the old flkey stuff off. Got what I thought was the closest looking liner I could get which was foam backed. Glued it to the boards. Could not find the chrome plastic dividers though. They were so brittle and just fell apart too easy. I used steel strip and stainless screws.

What kind of mufflers are you installing? SS or regular steel pipes? I thought this car was a single exhaust. Since it's a high compression motor I'm guessing you'll be paying an arm and leg for the gas to run it.

I'll get the quotes tomorrow on the different options that the shop will offer. I was planning on going with SS pipes. Car was originally a single exhaust vehicle, but I want to make it a double exhaust.

Your call, but dual exhaust will make the car louder inside as well.
