The factory 8 track ONLY connects to the factory AM/FM stereo. This is not a conventional system that has RCA connectors for an aux input. It's a dedicated design.

Joe,

Does that mean it only works with the system using the multiplexer or any AM/FM radio

I though the statement "ONLY works with the factory AM/FM stereo" was pretty clear...

I will add, however, that the factory 8 track CAN be used as a stand-alone if you are willing to modify the wiring. The 8 track has it's own amp built in. While it plugs into the factory stereo wiring it really interrupts speaker wires, switching the speakers from the stereo radio output to the 8 track output.

Nope.

My previous 70 442 had an 8 track with an AM radio. Rear speaker too.

It is on the build sheet.

You are correct, my apologies. I was looking at an earlier year. The 1970 SPECS booklet clearly shows the 8 track available with U58 (AM/FM stereo) or U63 (Deluxe Pushbutton Radio). With U63, the 8 track included the rear speaker option, since this was required for the stereo 8 track. As I mentioned above, the 8 track has it's own amps and doesn't use the ones in the radio.

A factory 8-track will work with any factory radio as long as the radio is rear-speaker equipped. Or, at least that has been my experience with the '68 and '69 model years. A multi-plex unit is not necessary. The stereo sound comes from the 8-track unit.

Thanks. You beat me to it. Joe's response was just snarky enough that it pushed me to go the Wild About Cars website and pull up the 442 Order Sheet published there. Just like the salesmans guide Joe posted it shows the 8 track as available with the deluxe radio.
