Thoughts on DeSoto
Have run across a '61 Hardtop (1 of 2123 built). Rarity and a dead brand (kinda like Oldsmobile). Beautiful lines, miles of chrome, 365 Wedge. Any thoughts from the gallery?

It is a cool car but I just don't like the front of it. It is like it has two grills. Other than that I think it is a beautiful car. Here are a couple pictures I snapped of a 60 Desoto in Oklahoma a couple years ago when we were on vacation. It had a very detailed 392 Hemi in it and was a really neat car. I don't think the car was much different but the front was. Neat car.

I have a 1955 and 3 - 1957 DeSotos.
The 1957 Desoto is probably the most spectacular tail fin in the history
of the universe (though 1959 Caddy guys would object)....
But the 1961 is certainly gorgeous -- and that is truly a beautiful car....
Desoto went out with a certain flair and pizazz in 1961... what a shame!!!!
Enjoy

Very cool last-year desoto, always been a fan of the 57-61 Mopar / virgil exner designs esp. the coupes. Not a fan of the canted headlights - I think the Desoto guy and the buick guy must have got drunk together at the same bar in the late 50's once when they came up with that. My opinion. Regardless those lines are all stunning to me.
Same year Desoto for sale here locally but a coupe: https://seattle.craigslist.org/oly/cto/6015711651.html

This is the place for big wing Mopar products http://bigmauto.com/ . John likes things that look like they should fly... Good people to deal with, his wife has a HO Oldsmobile also...... Tedd

Its funny that the auto manufacturers never learned from past mistakes. Desoto, Imperial, and Plymouth went away due to mismanagement of competing brands going after the same markets. Sound familiar... Oldsmobile and Pontiac went away due to the same reasons. Same with Mercury and I see Lincoln following suite. It's a shame as all of them were once great car brands in their own right.

Truly unique designs!
Just look at how for we have come (negatively speaking), to see most vehicles on the road today designed so similarly, you almost can't tell one from another. One big old group of snooze-mobiles in a rental fleet. It seems like not many are willing to take a chance on automobile designs anymore.

I used to occasionally act as chauffeur for some people who ran a classic hire service. Among their fleet were a 1959 Cadillac, 1959 DeSoto, 1960 Mercury and a Corvette. All were in great shape, by some distance the most pleasurable to drive was the DeSoto.

Wow, Craig, I'm impressed.
The '57s are really fantastic cars.
I love the '59 Buicks.
Back when I was in high school, my great uncle owned a junkyard, and one day I ran into my cousin (his son) driving a top-o'-the-line '59 sedan, no rust, no dents, stunning chrome-filled interior. I told him I loved it.
He told me it turned up in the junkyard, and his father had just given it to him.
Ran into him a few months later, said "If you ever want to sell that..."
He said, "Aw, I wish you'd said something. I sold it to a guy for 75 bucks last week!"
Oh, well.

Can you imagine showing up at a car show with that red and white 57 Desoto? You would have a crowd around it all day long. I think the styling was way ahead of its time. I love it but I thought it was gaudy in 1957 when I was 11.

61s are super rare, only made a few months into the model year. Even at a Mopar show you'll never see one. We had a '58 DeSoto, '58 Dodge and 2 '58 Chryslers before I got our present '58 Olds Super 88... love em all!
